For decades, the Catalina Channel Swimming Federation (CCSF) has served as the guardian of one of the most iconic open water swims in the world: the Catalina Channel. Spanning roughly 20 miles between Catalina Island and the Southern California mainland, this crossing is more than a swim—it’s a test of endurance, preparation, and respect for the ocean.
At Core Values California (CVXCA), we’re proud to partner with CCSF and support the athletes, observers, and volunteers who keep this historic swim alive. Today, we’re excited to share more about CCSF’s mission, its role in open water swimming history, and how you can get involved.
The Catalina Channel: A Swim Steeped in History
The Catalina Channel is recognized as part of the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming, alongside the English Channel and the circumnavigation of Manhattan Island. Since the early 20th century, swimmers from around the world have traveled to Southern California to attempt this legendary crossing.
What makes the Catalina Channel unique isn’t just the distance, it’s the conditions. Night starts, shifting currents, cold water, marine life encounters, and long hours of solitude demand both physical and mental strength. Every successful crossing represents months (often years) of preparation and a deep respect for the ocean.
Through it all, CCSF has been there to ensure the integrity, safety, and historical record of every attempt.
The Mission of the Catalina Channel Swimming Federation
CCSF exists to protect the sport and the swimmers who take it on. Their mission includes:
- Promoting interest in Catalina Channel swimming
- Advising and providing information to swimmers planning a crossing
- Promoting swimmer safety and welfare
- Observing and authenticating Catalina Channel swims
- Observing and authenticating swims around Catalina Island
- Preserving historical data and records of Catalina Channel swimming
This work ensures that every swim is conducted fairly, safely, and in alignment with long-standing open water swimming standards.
Why Observers Matter
One of the most important roles within CCSF is the official observer.
Observers are responsible for documenting and authenticating each swim attempt. They serve as the eyes and ears of the Federation, ensuring rules are followed and providing an official record of the swim. But the role is far more than administrative.
Becoming a CCSF observer means:
- Riding on the escort boat during a channel crossing
- Witnessing one of the most meaningful moments of a swimmer’s life
- Experiencing the magic of the Pacific Ocean-often alongside dolphins, sea lions, and even whales
- Playing a direct role in preserving open water swimming history
It’s one of the most immersive ways to support the sport.
How to Become a CCSF Observer
CCSF hosts two all-day observer training sessions each year in Southern California. These sessions prepare volunteers with everything they need to confidently serve as official observers.
Each training includes:
- Comprehensive observer education
- A half-day CPR/AED certification
- No additional cost for certification, thanks to generous CCSF donors
Upcoming Observer Training Dates
- Long Beach — April 11, 2026 (Hotel Current)
- San Diego — April 25, 2026 (Coronado Community Center)
