There’s nothing like the first whistle of National League season- fast tempo, physical
possessions, and zero “easy” games. USA Water Polo Men's National League kicked off Week 1 (February 6–8, 2026) across multiple Southern California sites.
Sunset Men’s Water Polo arrived ready and they looked the part, too.
A Fresh Look for a Big Stage
This season, we had the chance to work directly with Ty, the team captain, to bring a new look to Sunset: new suits for the squad and team shirts to match. It’s been awesome collaborating with a leader who cares about the details, because when the game speeds up, the little things matter.
What is USA Water Polo National League?
Run by USA Water Polo, National League is one of the top domestic competition pathways in the U.S., designed to create consistent, high-level match play in a structured format. For 2026, the league expanded to six weekends of regular-season play and introduced 18U club action blended into the schedule, creating an even bigger stage for teams and fans.
In short: it’s a proving ground- where teams sharpen systems, test depth, and learn quickly what holds up under pressure.
Weekend Recap: One Big Win, Two Tough Lessons
Game 1: Sunset starts strong - Win vs. South County (15–11)
Sunset opened the weekend with energy and execution, taking control early and closing out a 15–11 win over South County. A strong start that set the tone: purposeful offense, composed defense, and the grit to finish possessions when legs get heavy.
Game 2: A hard test- Loss vs. USA Youth (9–17)
Then came a tough matchup against USA Youth, where Sunset ran into a disciplined, high-pressure game and fell 9–17. National League weekends can swing fast, and this one demanded a quick reset because the next game was waiting.
Game 3: Sunday grind- Loss vs. NL Lions (12–16)
Sunday morning brought another battle against the NL Lions. Sunset fought for it, but ultimately took a 12–16 loss in a game that felt like a true National League classic: physical, momentum shifts, and every error punished.
The Bigger Picture
A 1–2 weekend doesn’t tell the whole story especially in a league format built for growth over multiple weekends. One win proves the ceiling is there. Two losses show exactly where the details need tightening before the next round: counter defense, late-game possessions, exclusion management, and converting “almost” into goals.
That’s the value of the National League. It exposes the gaps and gives you the reps to close them.
What’s Next
With six weekends on the 2026 calendar, there’s time to build, adjust, and come back sharper the next time Sunset hits the water.
And for us, it’s always a privilege to support teams like Sunset- especially when leaders like Ty help drive the vision. Suits, shirts, and a season that’s just getting started.
