Celebrating National Girls & Women in Sports Day

Every year, National Girls & Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) reminds us why access, opportunity, and representation in sport matter — especially for girls as they grow into confident young women.

This year, February 4th marks the 40th annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day, a milestone that highlights decades of progress, advocacy, and impact made possible through sport.

At Core Values California (CVXCA), this day isn’t just a moment on the calendar. It reflects the heart of who we are, how we show up for teams, and why we believe sport plays such a powerful role in shaping lives.

Why Sports Matter for Girls

Research consistently shows that participation in sports has a lasting impact on girls’ development. Both on and off the field.

Girls who play sports are more likely to:

  • Build confidence and self-esteem
  • Develop leadership and teamwork skills
  • Stay physically active into adulthood
  • Perform better academically
  • Develop resilience and a strong sense of identity

Perhaps most importantly, sports teach girls how to take up space, trust their bodies, and believe in their abilities- lessons that extend far beyond competition.

Yet despite these benefits, girls are still more likely than boys to drop out of sports during adolescence. Access, resources, representation, and feeling like they belong all play a role.

That’s where teams, coaches, communities and brands can make a difference.

The History and Impact of NGWSD

Founded in 1987, National Girls & Women in Sports Day began as a special day to recognize women’s sports and the achievements of female athletes. Over time, it has evolved into a nationwide movement that celebrates participation, progress, and possibility.

Powered by the Women’s Sports Foundation (WSF), NGWSD draws national attention to the importance of equal opportunities in sport for girls and women. The day serves as both a celebration and a call to action- inspiring girls across the country to unlock their limitless potential through sport.

The Women’s Sports Foundation supports this mission year-round by expanding opportunities for girls and women of all backgrounds through:

  • Research and advocacy
  • Community impact initiatives
  • Education and awareness
  • Collaborative partnerships across sport

Many prominent female athletes have played an active role in advancing this work, helping ensure that future generations of girls have access to sport and the benefits that come with it.

Representation Matters- In Leadership and in Sport

CVXCA was founded by a woman, built with the belief that girls and women deserve to feel supported, represented, and empowered in the spaces they compete.

That perspective influences everything we do from the way we design gear, to how we partner with teams, to how we listen to coaches and athletes.

When girls see women leading, creating, and building brands within sport, it reinforces a simple truth:

They belong here.

Keeping Girls in the Game

Staying in sport isn’t just about access to a pool, a field, or a team. It’s also about feeling confident, comfortable, and proud of what you’re wearing.

When athletes feel good in their gear, they show up differently with confidence, ownership, and pride.

That’s why CVXCA works closely with female teams and programs to create custom gear designed specifically for their athletes, including:

  • Suits built for performance and durability
  • Thoughtful fit across different body types
  • Designs that reflect team identity and pride
  • Gear that looks just as good on the pool deck as it does in competition

We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all solutions, especially for female athletes.

Supporting Female Teams Through Custom Gear

Our custom process is built to support programs at every level from youth and high school teams to collegiate and club programs.

By partnering directly with teams, coaches, and organizations, we help remove barriers that can make participation harder:

  • A clear, supportive ordering process
  • Dedicated sales and design guidance
  • Domestic manufacturing in California for quality and accountability
  • Flexible ordering options for teams and athletes

The goal is simple: make it easier for girls and women to stay in sport and feel supported while doing it.

From the Water And Beyond

National Girls & Women in Sports Day is about more than celebrating athletes. It’s about recognizing the role sport plays in shaping confident, capable women and committing to building environments where girls want to stay, grow, and lead.

CVXCA proudly recognizes NGWSD and all those who support female student-athletes, coaches, and administrators as they continue to lead us toward a brighter, more inclusive future in sport.

Because when girls stay in sports, they carry those lessons with them- for life.
